A Relocation Chart In Astrology and the Difference Between an AstroCartography Chart

A Relocation Chart is a recalculated natal chart set in a different locale in the world, away from where one was born but in the same moment in time with the same snapshot of the sky.  What changes is your Rising Sign,  the sign at each house cusps and planet positions. The planet sign and degree stay the same, as found in your natal chart.

For example,  if you were born in the US and have your Rising sign in Aquarius, that would change if you relocated somewhere in Europe, say Germany. It would have to be a major change in location to see the difference. If you were born in New York and relocated to Toronto, there would be no significant change since the shift is slight in longitude. The slight changes you might see are the degrees of your Rising sign. However, if you relocated to California, your rising and house angles would change signs, degrees or both. You would also see your natal planets move in a different House.

***Ascendent degrees changes depending on latitude and longitude. The MC degree increases about 1 degree of longitude move, decreasing westward.

You can look at the relocation chart as complementary to your natal chart. Your natal chart is an imprint of your natural disposition on the exterior and interior world reflected by occurring transits in the sky. It can supplement your natal chart to give you further support by emphasizing certain planets’ potency in a certain location.

Significance and Purpose

A Relocation Chart in Astrology can change your energy, experiences and luck in life. It can accentuate and weaken planets. This is determined by the house or angles it sits in your relocated chart. Overall, relocating to a different part of the world can improve and enhance health, romance, and success in career, create happiness and contentment, and give you more focus or a sense of belonging. However, keep in mind that when one or more planets are improved or strengthened, other planets or functions of life are weakened or become less favourable. In other words, we can’t have it all, but getting a proper reading and having a focus can help you find an ideal balance of energy.

Let’s use my friends Oscar’s chart, as an example:

A bit of background: I met him while living in Sofia, Bulgaria for a few months. He was (still is) the epitome of a Leo Ascendent. Our original Ascendent placement is an inherent part of ourselves, a DNA astrological imprint. We will carry that energy no matter where we go.

I met him at a social event, and we were the only two native English speakers at the beginning of the meeting. Naturally, we navigated to each other. We got along instantly based on our Sun/Moon/Mercury Gemini compatibility and his Sagittarius Moon with my Sag stelliums. We talked up a storm all night. He was fun and intelligent. I also found out we are both in the same profession as copywriters. That was a year and a half ago. We still keep in touch. Our random messages mainly involve our travels in different parts of the world. Both of us share an infinity for Europe. Here’s why:

Without diving too deep into his chart, I will look at the obvious planet placements that have significantly changed his experiences.

Oscar Natal Chart:

His natal chart shows his Leo Ascendent. In Bulgaria, he has Sagittarius Ascendent with his 11° moon in the first House. He also has a stellium of planets in his 7th House. Our conversations always involve relationship status, history, quirks and so on.

He’s shared that he’s had difficulty finding a relationship in Nevada. In Europe, the story has completely flipped for him. He’s never had so much attention in his life before compared to a lifetime of dry spells in the love department in Nevada.

He’s not a shy guy, so that was never the problem. But having his Moon in his first House makes it easier for him to show his feelings–unfiltered (Sagittarius), as they are, without passing them through his logical Mercury in Gemini. His Moon also is conjunct the 14° Great Attractor. In short, having the degree of the Great Attractor in your first House gives you a heightened power of attraction.

Then we look at his 7th House, and Venus is there. How wonderful. The attraction and love relationship planet in her own house of the 7th will naturally attract partnerships. He’s also made many great friends as he’s travelled (including myself). You’ve got Mercury there as well. He joys (his new chart ruler Jupiter is also there, along with the Sun) in Europe because of all the relationships he’s made.

When we look at his 7th House natal placement. We see his North Node there. So, there’s an unconscious pull to 7th House matters. An important mission in his life to fulfill in order to find satisfaction.

I have noticed from talking to him consistently throughout the year and a half of our blossoming friendship that his views on socializing and having friends have evolved from 1) not caring about them, 2) talking about how he wants to see all the people he’s met again to 3) meeting them across the world to 4) currently wanting to be around them more often. This brings me to his second Relocation Chart. To note, most of the friends he’s made are French.

A few weeks ago, he expressed where he would like to settle down. With a bit of reservation, he shared his realization to settle in France and in the most unlikely place notorious in reputation, he admitted Paris. Not at all surprised. I supported his assertion.

Looking at his Relocated Chart in Paris, we see his North Node has pulled him there to a place of 4th House comfort. The hesitation makes sense since it is a relocation with an element of resistance (characteristic of our NN). Also, having planets in his 8th House, namely, Venus, gives him a deep attraction and intense love for Paris, which has great significance since he is on his Pluto line.

You’ll also notice he’s got his Mars there too. A potent placement for Mars compared to his natal Mars 12th House, which I am certain contributed to his inability to attract partnerships. Mars in the 12th sets up confusion in what the native wants to pursue, including whom to pursue.

I can’t wait to hear about the intense love he’ll attract and commit to(8th House dealings). I should share my thoughts about that with him soon.

The Difference Between a Relocation Chart and an AstroCartography Chart

A Relocation Chart in Astrology deals with the energy that changes within your birth chart and shows you where the changes are through the modified houses, angles and rising signs. It is a ‘local’ change determined by city.

An AstroCartography Chart is a global map that shows you the concentrated energy within a certain area of the world and will be expressed as the lines of energy (by a planet) on your four angles—Ascendent, Descendent, Mid-Heaven and Imueli Coeli.

For example, Venus’ influence on your Ascendent line will cover more than one country as it influences a whole longitude degree. This will be your dominant or concentrated energy in certain parts of the world. The planet will be of great influence and importance, and the themes the planet represents. According to Erin Sullivan of Where in the World: Astro*Carto*Graphy and Relocation, “When you deign to live on a specific planetary line, then that unique part of you rises more fully to consciousness.”  It is very significant to work with the agency of the planetary line you are living on or have travelled to.

**Relocation Chart—**With your birth details entered at astro.com, go to the Horoscope dropdown menu and choose your place of relocation under Extended Chart Selection, scroll to the very bottom to Default Settings. In the box *reference place*, add your new location or if there is already a location, press modify data. It should look like this:

Then go back to Chart Type and scroll down to Relocation Chart (needs reference)

Click ‘Show Your Chart’ and voila! You should now be looking at your relocated chart of a chosen city.
