Mars and I Work Well Together in the 1st House

January 2, 2019 · 3 min read · Mare Punzalan

There is a part of me that wishes I had Mars in the 1st house more often.

Selfish feels good.

Not thinking twice about your action is so liberating. I don’t wonder how I’m gonna sound or look. Mars makes me blazed through my thoughts and decisions more confidently, torpedo past others without a care. My confidence soars. A very refreshing transit. But more significantly, Mars in my 1st gives me a boost of energy in the important areas of my life, my work, my goals and the objectives connected to that.

For those who I personally know to have either Mars in their first house or (to some extent )Aries as their ascendent, I have found them to be upfront about who they are, their actions don’t need the approval of others and make decisions quite confidently—for the most part I envy this natal positioning, as I’m often aware of my surroundings and those who occupy the space. Since the first house is about me or the house of self. I look at it as my lens upon the outside world. There is a natural association to the sign of Aries and according to Dane Rudhyar’s “The Twelve Astrological Houses”, is the sign of all beginnings and the gate through which ideas and cosmic impulses enter the human sphere.

On the flip, Mars feeling at home in the 1st house can bring out the extreme. Over-aggression, self-interest or a extreme burning of energy can be the downfall for the planet. When it transits my Gemini ascendent, it’s raw energy and sheer focus can over ride my tendencies to over think myself out of action. My first impulse is through the characteristics of this sign. “I think” about things and can have my mind on and interest in too much things. I love to read, learn, write, and naturally this is how I navigate the world. When Mars journey’s through the gates of my 1st house, it’s like my normal energetic self hops onto a bullet train, gets the slower view(my brain) from the inside while still accomplishing task at the speed of the train. This makes my Mars in Sag in the 6th quite happy with all the action, and conjunct Mercury in Sag, even happier.

Mercury in Sag is a tricky placement to have, being in detriment. The centaur usually has too many ideas, scoping too many concepts, filled with grand visions—all at one time. My thoughts(Mercury) tend to get pulled in all directions. Mercury here gets confused, likely because his speed gets impeded as he doesn’t know which direction to cover first. Sometimes, it’s a nightmare having to think and speak when you’re brain works this way. As a writer it can get challenging. I’ve got to constantly find ways to balance both Mercury’s minute details from the Archers grand views. But when were in the Mars in Gemini season I turn into Marvel’s QuickSilver. Quicksilver is a fictional character from X-men who has the mutant power to MOVE AND THINK in superhuman, supersonic speed.

While Mercury’s need for more speed to keep up with all of the centaur’s visions is granted when Mars comes to visit it’s ruling house, the 11th house also feels the invigoration, with Aries at the cusp. Not only does determination and confidence spill onto my hopes for the future and the dreams I constantly try to realize, I get reminded of my accomplishments and what I’ve done to get there. This becomes comforting especially after a 12th house review from Mars or any other planet or luminary. It’s a time when I reevaluate my plans, purpose and the groups I belong to or associate with and whether these 11th house matters fit into the new and refreshing cycle I’ve started to embark.

Mars in the 1st house helps you to focus on yourself. It shakes up and fuels the houses and planetary bodies connected to the action-planet and the 1st house. For me, it’s about how I work, reestablishing my goals and associations. It’s about me and about many important aspects of my life. Focusing on myself alway feels so good.

How does Mars transit in the 1st house effect you?
