Mars In Astrology: Our Fighting Spirit
Mars in Astrology: Pure Force,Our Burning and Creative Will
If you want to know someone’s Mars, examine how they burn fuel to achieve their desires, when they flare up in anger, and if they extinguish or fan the flames.

Mars is pure energy. Like the planet’s fierce red color, a force burning, the energy is a symbol of heat, passion, intensity–the fire within. A build-up of currents which requires movement and expression. Fire needs other elements to keep it alive. It also burns erratically. To fan the blazing flames within, our Mars energy needs purpose and direction.
As the planet directly outside the Earth’s orbit, it is our Mars that seeks the experience, inflamed by our Venus “wants”, and then goes after it. Driven by desire and individual needs, the action planet is fundamentally selfish.
Between the age of 40-55 is when we truly develop our Mars. A stage in our human development when we become full-fledged adults and become our own. It is a period in our lives when we have little tolerance for bullshit and decipher where we genuinely want to place our energy.
The energy accelerates our desire to accomplish what’s truly important. It’s generally a stage in our life when we are called to work on what we desire for ourselves or become complacent. It’s also a period that brings on the infamous mid-life crisis stage. If we aren’t where we want to be, we react in dissatisfaction accordingly. Mars drives us towards self-limitations (Saturn) or expansion and evolution of self (Uranus).
We also pay or are rewarded for our Mars actions. How we take on the world through our Mars will, force, and desire is intertwined by our Jupiterian morals or lack thereof. How we exert ourselves is determined by our beliefs. At the same time, we can change our beliefs along the way as we learn and experience life through our decisions. We develop wisdom to shape mature intended actions or pay the piper with Saturn (karma and/or old age).
Mars in Astrology is our level of aggression and is coloured by each sign. It exerts and is fed by the elements.
Fire, being the most dynamic, exerts physical action, instinct and impulse on Mars. It forges ahead, burning its will and determination, truths and creative self-identity. The airy Mars holds back in action and can ruminate before it plows through, but don’t get it twisted; it’s assertive, masculine energy and can spit a fireball of words. It is a force that roars in the abstract concepts.
Like air and fire, water isn’t contained; it can spread irrationally and emotionally. A watery Mars is stoked by meaning, depth and spiritual purpose. With earthy Mars, the less pronounced of the four, will and determination are steadier. The long-distance runner, or the mountain climber, is an aggression seen through goals and results.
The house that Mars sits in natally tells us where the warrior planet will push for what it wants, where we will put in most of our energy and efforts. It’s also an area of life where we can be fiercely competitive, easily angered, and run into trouble.
Mars likely burns the most fuel in the fire Houses, seeking creative expression and expansion. Social airy Houses are where thoughts are provoked, where we try to push our ideas and stoke fire in others. In private watery settings, Mars is more passive, and the energy will push for security, intimacy and meaning. Mars is grounded in the earth Houses. An energy that builds, thrives in work, accumulates resources, and is fuelled by tangible results and success.
Mars lights us up, a constant circulation of dynamic energy that needs output and input. The part of us that burns with will and determination and keeps our spirit fighting for what we want.
