The 7th House in Astrology: The Mirror and the Other

The 7th House in Astrology

We move from the subjective 6th House of improvement, skills and daily routine and into the objective 7th House of partnerships, where we share our personal, improved selves with others.

Ruled by Venus and associated with Libra, the elements of the 7th House deal with interactions, cooperation and building and establishing relationships on a personal and professional level. This is the House of contracts and where negotiations are made. As the first House on the northern horizon, the House following the last personal House, we have a view of the exterior world through the awareness of others. In Humanistic Astrology, the Descendant—or DC–activities and qualities provide awareness of the significance of others. Compared to the 5th House of fun relationships and dating, the energy of the 7th has a serious, committed tone.

The sign at the cusp can give a qualitative layer we are naturally attracted to. With fire element on the cusp, we have eyes on the creative, bold and assertive types. An air sign can signify our attraction to communicative, intellectual types. A water element shows we value a deeper and more emotional connection, while the earth at the cusp prefer logical and grounded energy.

Planets accentuate the House and its meaning further. It can tell us what we value and what attributes we look for in order to commit to another. A natal moon on the 7th can reveal a nurturing and motherly partner. The Sun tells us we seek a more spirited, social energy. Someone who stands out. Similar to the Sun, natal Uranus reveals a unique character, someone who possesses exciting and different ideas of life. Saturn would suggest a more mature partner who is established and respected.

We attract similar frequencies to our own. By being conscious of our own disposition and approach, we can become more effective when dealing with others.

As the House of open enemies, the planets can also show the type of enemy we can encounter throughout our lives and how we handle conflict involving others—usually triggered during transits from other planets. The warrior planet Mars in the 7th is forceful and combative, yet when on high vibration, it can reflect the native’s courageous energy needed to leap into new ventures.

Mercury can indicate a more verbal and strategic approach. Fast on its toes, with a quick wit, the trickster archetype can charm their way out of trouble. Just as charming, Venus is graceful and diplomatic but can turn vengeful and underhanded if things are not ideal. Pluto here can create powerful and wealthy enemies. The relationship can be self-sabotaging energy, yet it has the potential to get to the root of a relationship problem.

As the House furthest from the Ascendant or from the 1st House of self, natal planets on the Descendant can indicate the subconscious qualities within us. The missing parts of ourselves we inherently desire to integrate. A part of us we have yet to unify into our conscious reality.

The idea is that from a physical point of view, the moment we took our first breath, it’s the sign at the easternmost point of the horizon that we give to our Ascendant—aka our rising sign. Thus, the westernmost point— the sign and its qualities at the Descendant—disappears from view. What we aren’t conscious of we project and look for in others, giving us that false sense of completion when we meet a person that seemingly joins the missing pieces of our personality.

Whether platonic or romantic, we attract qualities in others we seek to find within ourselves. The longer transits from slower-moving planets like Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto can help start the process of self-integration.

From the 1st to the 6th House of our personal chart, we grow from the image of our subjective self and into the 7th House of relationships, where we merge with the world, the objective external reality.
