A Birth Chart Read of the USA: From Their Sagittarius Ascendent Appetite to a Stellium in Patriot Sign Cancer in the Powerful 8th House
“The constellation Sagittarius forms into a fierce hunter with his bow and arrow always aimed at Scorpius.” It is where we find the Galactic Centre believe to be the birth of existence and where all energy returns. Ruled by Jupiter, Sagittarius shares key characteristics with the planet, involving expansion of insight and wisdom. Seeing the impossible as possible, it sees beyond the horizon, unafraid to take risks. An outlook coloured by optimism, unwavering in the desire for freedom, they are the same lens worn by the United States, as signified by the lyrics from their National Anthem, “land of the brave and home of the free.”
It is no surprise to see that the US ascendent falls at the cusp of Sagittarius.

When I was served my first few meals out during my Bali trip, I remember thinking how small the portions were. They were thoughts forming from my Canadian, western eyes. Though I knew what was in front of me would satiate, I couldn’t help but think it wasn’t enough. I was used to larger portions, out of which I normally made two meals. My next thought was how would an American feel about this?No doubt, the skimpy details of the plate would disappoint their typically oversized appetite. A natural Sagittarius response taking the helm of the 1st house—physical self and the outlook, the lens worn in view of the world. Big, bigger, more and plenty more can size up the belly of a Sagittarius rising. A bottomless appetite affirmed by Pisces at the cusp of their 4th house of foundation. Boundless Jupiter rules both signs, thus ruling comfort zones, along with immediate impressions. At the top of the chart is Virgo energy, for all to see, the sign that rules the stomach. Neptune, also a planet boundless in nature, happens to be there.
I remember my early days of restaurant gigs, I worked with a Canadian woman who lived in New York for a decade. She developed the blunt crassness of a New Yorker, but explained herself like a polite Canuck. Having to travel to different states of the US many times, certainly the unfiltered words spread beyond the Yankee borders. If you’ve had a chance to travel around the world, you’ll know the stigma American travellers have in other countries. Sometimes the straight-forward attitude is taken as arrogance. Seen as the shadow side of Sagittarius, a defence mechanism, the energy can turn stagnant and stubborn in view. The sign, and therefore the chart, is after all ruled by Jupiter, the king of the Gods in mythology. An energy which can act entitled—his string of snatching and tricking women for his sexual desires comes to mind, with an air of superiority that can seem pompous, can turn boastful, and inclined to exaggeration. Liberal servings also taken from Neptune at the top of the chart. The country is known for its illusions—Hollywood and the land of opportunity, selling the notion of the American dream.

Stellium In Cancer
When we look at Jupiter it is in the energy of Cancer, protective and nurturing at its highest vibration and defensive and resentful at its low vibration. There is a stellium involved in the sign of Cancer, which include Mercury, Sun, Venus in the 7th or partnerships and 8th house of business, strongly influenced by Jupiter and each one a power player in the success and leadership of the nation. The North Node in Leo is also involved in the impactful energy, as it is in the 8th house power dynamic.
Jupiter, being exalted in Cancer, does its best in the crab sign. Jupiter covers our beliefs and the sign it is in tells us how we assimilate such truth. In the Cancer sign of home, hearth and comforts, faith is placed on patriotism, exclusivity, the melting pot belief. A trust in protecting the family unit, further amplified and can become muddled with a unifying but foggy Pisces 4th house cusp. A nation that fundamentally believes in protecting their own from the outside. Defensive shell walls go up when necessary. As seen after 911 and the strict measures implemented to national borders, and in a literal sense walls erected between Mexico and the US. Looking at the sign of their moon Aquarius, it is interesting to note how that melting pot belief is accentuated. There is a paradox with the Aquarius energy, as it strives for individuality, the energy also places the collective over the self.
Being one of the four cardinal signs, Cancer energy is comfortable as the initiator, as an entrepreneur. Strong currents of intuition naturally charges them with a keen business sense, an incandescent flow to their powerful 8th house–and strongly surging by natal planets. The Cancer stellium volts also powers up the 7th house of partnerships, brightens and secures the nations 10th house of status and legacy, tenanted by Saturn in Libra.
The 7th house rules both business and personal partnerships. This area has ample luck and blessings with Venus sitting in the comforts of her own house, which ramps up her powers of persuasion, negotiation and lure. With Jupiter by her side this area is further expanded with the qualities mentioned. However, the inflated bubble can turn into indulgence, superficiality, tending to excessive desires, acquiring more than it needs. There can be an emotional agenda to acquire power and what it wants. The source of tension can be exacerbated by the square between the Sun in Cancer in the 8th house and Saturn in Libra in the 10th house. Jupiter’s arrows of greed can be seen in the nation’s desire of power and wealth by having their hands in many of world’s honey pot of resources.

With the US contributing to a quarter of the world’s financial economy, it would have to be the Sun in Cancer that is at the other seat of power, the one orchestrating from behind the scenes or in this case from the deep crevices of the powerful 8th house. The house of other people’s resources is where Sun’s vitality is found. The nations life blood and where they shine. This is the house of investment, business, the house of desire, acquiring powerful wealth through others and the deep reservoirs found in it. This charges their 7th house of negotiative powers of persuasion and amps up status to Saturn in Libra in the 10th house. It is a well spring of force in entrepreneurship and material wealth—with potent Pluto in Capricorn in the 2nd house of personal resources. A fully stocked arsenal of deep power, whether used in the right direction or underhandedly, gives them what they want from others.
The layers of penetrative and persuasive force is stacked in the 8th house of business and other people’s resources thanks to the energy of Mercury in Cancer, equipped with logical foresight and strategic play. Another double threat, the ruler of commerce gives the native a keen business sense though deep intuition, powers of communication and negotiation—an energy that is about knowing what the other wants to hear and knowing when to strike.
When we look at the 3rd house(associated with the qualities of Mercury), it is where the detached and stoic tides of the Aquarius moon resides. A cool and calculating moon, its higher perspective adds to the layer of foresight and powers of communication. Again sending thunder bolts to already powerful houses—the 10th and 7th with two of Aquarius rulers found in each respective houses. The stubborn rebellious streak of their moon combined with Sagittarius’s big ideas at the wheel, places the nation at frontier of intimately knowing the new and innovative.

On the opposite axis from Aquarius is the North Node in Leo and back in the 8th house of deep reservoirs of power and wealth. This is the engine that helps flame the desires of the 8th house, burning strong of Leo qualities of fame, attention and creative self-identity. A torch that is fuelled by the steady material riches of Taurus in the 5th house and a wick struck from Pluto in Capricorn in their 2nd house of core values. With North Node in Leo in the one of the most powerful areas of the chart and the nations seat of power, the flames of desires are constantly fanned. In other words, the United States are fulfilling their collective mission of recognition, global wealth and leadership.
The nations matrix of power sparks from the broad insights and limitless appetite of a Sagittarius Ascendant. The signs ample supply of arrows benefits the United States to point in and target many directions. But like the constellation itself, directing its bow towards Scorpius, it is the power and wealth of its 8th house stellium that gives the Archer precise shots. A generator of continuous currents, it brightens up and constantly charges the critical points of the chart, including the most significant, where ruler Jupiter in Cancer sits, securing the nations throne, their god status, an influential global power directing where life begins and ends.
