The 2nd House in Astrology: What we identify with self and the experiences created in our first house can shape our 2nd house values, self-worth and how we enjoy the earthly experience.

As a succedent house, this area of life connects our self-development and identity from the 1st House to the social sphere of our 3rd House. The functions of the 2nd House are what anchor us in the exchanges and mutability of the cadent 3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th houses.

We are formed by the values and the ‘likes’ of our 2nd House. Through our values, we build our material resources, turning them into assets and wealth, as a result, building self-reliance and confidence. The self-worth we cultivate keeps us secure and surviving. We learn what we like and don’t like, what we appreciate and what gives us pleasure on a tangible level. The sign at the cusp tells what is important, what we end up desiring, how we accumulate it and how well we maintain our resources and wealth.

Aries at the 2nd House cusp will value spirit, confidence, bravery and self. At the same time, the Ram energy has the natural confidence to acquire resources. While a Cancer second cusp will value emotions, relationships and the comforts of home and building one. Both being cardinal signs, the Aries and Cancer likely won’t sit idle to wait for material wealth to come around; rather, the action-oriented modalities will go out there and find it.

The sign at the cusp can also indicate how one can react if there is a lack in the 2nd House. Water signs can turn emotional if there is limited resources. The feeling of high inadequacy and lack of material wealth can overwhelm an earth sign. Each sign will act according to the quality of its element and modality.

Planets in 2nd House

When natal planets tenant the 2nd House, the functions of life become activated, giving it a higher degree of focus. It’s a second layer of characteristics and quality in this area of life. Jupiter will attach beliefs and moral conduct to the House. It will also have an optimistic view, coloured in luck and blessings. Pleasures include learning, acquiring knowledge, and spending money on school in ways that the native can expand knowledge. The person will also likely be generous with their wealth.

Mars will be aggressive in creating self-pleasure and will constantly burn in the desire to obtain more wealth, but it can also be impulsive and quickly burn through their resources.

Uranus will have an unorthodox set of values, money may be acquired for the sake of freedom. A 2nd House Uranus is a person who values and spends money on technology. The aspects to planets determine the challenges and ease of accumulating material wealth, creating and enjoying physical pleasures.

Ripple Effects

There are different ways the energy can turn on itself. The shadows that appear here depend on the entirety of the chart. Generally speaking, if our 1st House (early experiences) is damaged, it will ripple across the entire chart. The 2nd House is ruled by Venus. The darker side to the planet’s qualities can mean compensating through indulgences, greed and superficiality. 2nd house values can turn skewed and incessantly unsatisfying.

The lower vibrations of dissatisfaction and low self-esteem can threaten relationships in all areas of life, but the most damaging can be the 8th, and the most lasting can be seen in the 3rd.

The 3rd House of communication, relatives and immediate environment is where we express the qualities of our 2nd House. It is also where our values can be challenged, thus strengthening or undermining our self-worth and the pleasures we seek. Since we can meet these challenges at an early age, the health of the 3rd will define the rest of the cadent houses.

For example, the 6th House’s work dynamic will echo your attitude and the interactions of your 3rd House. In general, a sense of harmony will cultivate your values and encourage sharing and exploring them in healthy ways. If there is conflict, the support we look for in the 3rd House familial setting may be lacking, destabilizing what’s important to us, and can impede full expression.

On the opposite axis of the 2nd House is always the 8th House of intimate and business partnerships, resources, and the wealth built with another. If the 2nd House is what I want,  what I have, and what I acquire—what I take, the 8th is the give-and-take House. What we value, the healthy or unhealthy functions from our 2nd House plays out in our 8th House of committed partnerships.

The dynamics of the 8th House are where we are likely to purge our deepest dissatisfactions and inadequacies. It is an area where we are our most vulnerable, where we tend to witness potential damage to our self-esteem. Therefore, the 2nd House can define us on an intimate, as well as, a professional level. The energy of our 2nd House can help strengthen or weaken our 8th House.
