The 3rd House in Astrology: Strutt Your Stuff

The 3rd house in Astrology: communication, skills and immediate exchanges with our siblings, relatives and neighbours.

The 3rd House in Astrology

Proceeding the 2nd House, the 3rd House is where we initially express our 1st House personality and begin to communicate and act out our likes and dislikes. As the first social House, it is our initial integration of self and values we express to others, ultimately nurturing confidence and cultivating natural skills.

I’d call the 3rd House the familial sandbox. The parameters are known; we know who is around, and someone in charge isn’t far away. It’s the first social order we experience outside our crib and, eventually, our family home. Dealing with siblings and relatives with similar personality traits can help us branch out and grow into self-awareness within a familiar atmosphere.

This is the House of Gemini, one of relating and communicating. How will you play? Will you share your toys? How social will you be? Will you be in a corner sitting by yourself? Or will your curiosity stretch outside comfortable bounds?

The sign at the cusp can indicate how we adjust to integrate. A Leo will want to be the centre of attention, sometimes overshadowing those around. Gemini’s natural propensity is to share ideas and interact. Scorpio may hold back and become keenly aware of its environment.

Where are you in the hierarchy? Oldest, youngest, somewhere in between? Are you the favourite? Do you all get along? Did you get to express your nature or did it get suppressed or ignored? Is there a bully in the family? Are you the bully? Depending on our status and the nurturing state, our self-confidence and self-value can continually be validated or chipped away.

A tenanted 3rd House gives more focus and energy, adding another layer of quality to the nature of the House. Venus will see the positives and find ways to interact harmoniously. The Sun can give much spirit and purpose. Saturn will slow things down, delay this area of life and add serious overtones in sometimes harsh and melancholic ways.

As the first social House, it can influence and set the tone for the following mutable Houses. The 6th House work environment can become affected by 3rd House matters. The connection indicates how we get along in group settings. Are you a team player or not, competitive or lean towards passive behaviour? The 3rd House can determine how easily we share our ideas. Do you think before you speak? How expressive are you? Will you communicate effectively to get what you want?

We know an Aries cusp native may charge the area aggressively but sharpen intellect and communicate assertively. Uranus can spark genius ideas but create instability with siblings and the immediate environment. Mercury energizes its own House, able to make the best of a situation—making the native innately clever, mentally agile and communicative.

The 3rd House deals with communication and thought on a concrete, logical level, while its opposite House, the 9th, deals with abstract ideas and grand philosophies. Your experiences and relationships in your 3rd House can inform your moral code and help color your overview of the world. Your familial experiences help structure a level of trust, optimism and expansion of your ideals and beliefs.

Skills are also found in the 3rd House, with Mercury being the natural ruler. Connected to other areas and energy of our chart, the 3rd house qualities can indicate level of skill, the skills we need to cultivate and how well we can develop them.Virgo here shows a great analytical mind. Adding the energy of the Moon makes the native poignant at expressing ideas and gifted at evoking strong emotion in others. With Pluto, one is skilled at penetrative investigative work. Keep in mind that aspects will determine the planet’s ease and quality of expression.

The 3rd house quality can delay relationships with our immediate environment, cultivate growth in our communication style and indicate our skill set level. It is the House where we integrate with others, their ideas and opinions. It’s the area of life where we initially discover values outside of self, and depending on the nature of our own environment, the sign at the cusp will show how we adjust and respond. The 3rd House is where we initially start to share who we are,  where we can practice discernment, learn our limits, along with the limits of others, and learn to hone our skills and share ideas with others.
