The 4th House in Astrology: our home, emotions and roots.

The 4th house/IC/Nadir is where we root our 1st House personality and experiences, establish our 2nd House boundaries, return to rest, and take comfort from the interchanges, flux, and busy-ness of our 3rd House.

It is our home base that deals with our past, our parents and comforts.

As the foundation of our chart, the astrological sign and planets indicate the types of comforts we seek, the style and vibe we give our personal space, along with how we behave in the privacy of our home.

 Earth energy at the cusp of the 4th House may take comfort in objects. Generally taking care of their possessions, earth signs are organized and tidy. While a fixed Taurus may furnish their home with fine, luxurious objects and have the propensity to want things done a certain way, a Virgo can keep their home minimal and show their critical side when things are out of place. A pushy cardinal Capricorn will try to define the rules and establish order, making the home more about function than comfort.

The 4th House can reveal the past and the home environment growing up. Neptune can indicate delusions and uncertainties associated with the home, even a parent that was elusive or suffered from an addiction. The imaginative planet also shows a creative, artistic dynamic within the family. Mercury reveals a home of ample communication and activity. Also, the sprite planet shows restlessness and is where one seeks to improve the functions of one’s personal sphere. Pluto likely shows major trauma, crisis, and intensity within the family of origin. Pluto intensifies wherever it is located and creates major deep transformations.

Where we come from is where we return in the end.

According to Howard Sasporatas, “What is most deep within comes out at the end.” This is where deeper needs are eventually expressed. “What truly matters inside is given more consideration and space at the end of our lives. One extreme illustration of this is a deathbed confession in which people dramatically discover truths about themselves which they keep guarded for decades.”

With water energy at the cusp, one can turn reflective about one’s life, depending on the Moon placement and other elements that determine the quality of the 4th House. Their emotions can be either nurturing or drowning in sorrow and regret. Having the benefics at the nadir, Jupiter and Venus can indicate a loving and abundant space at old age. However, if any of the two indulgent planets are badly aspected, material resources can be an issue at the end of life. Saturn at the bottom of a chart can give more authority and security over one’s personal life or further constriction.

The health of your 4th House is critical to the other angular houses (in addition to other houses). A strong foundation, a nutrient-filled 4th house soil can help build on the success of our 10th house legacy, career and goals. Along with the 1st House of self-identity, our 7th House of relationships will be harmonious and fruitful if we have planted the right seeds at the base of our chart. What we nurture grows into our 7th House of relationships and eventually finds its way into the other watery, hidden and intimate Houses (8th, 12th). If there are unprocessed issues, rot in the foundation of our chart, it will show itself and profoundly impact our intimate partnerships.
