The 8th House in Astrology: A Wellspring of Inner Power

The 8th House in Astrology: From facing, transforming our fears and traumas to discovering our hidden treasures and owning our powers.

The 8th House in Astrology

Ah, the mysterious 8th house, shrouded of the past, lurking of shadows and stretching downwards into depths unknown. Even the wise and the powerful fear this area of life.

A good example would be J.R.R Tolkien’s beloved, fictional character Gandalf the Grey in the trilogy Lord of the Rings. A wizard who leads a Fellowship of brave men and creatures to save Middle Earth. Gandalf is endowed with experience, wisdom and magic. When the group is forced to enter the Misty Mountains and descend the depths of Moria, we also see the deep fears of the old wizard, the past locked away, hidden in a labyrinth of winding channels and dark caves.

The 8th House is our psychological soup, which can be full of fears, secrets and the trauma and shame that come along with it. Considered one of the ancestral houses, what we inherit from our bloodline. What has been hidden can be buried from lifetimes ago, if not from our childhood or from past experiences in our present life.

Unless one has strong Pluto and Scorpio energy or natal planets here, this area of life can sit dormant, unassuming. It usually takes transits from outer planets to wake this area up. A period when we are forced, compelled to enter into the caves of our past, our subconscious reality and start the awakening and transformational journey.

Gandalf is spooked once in the vast web of subterranean halls, cavities and mines of Moria. He is cautious, unsettled, and rickety in paranoia, warning the others to keep silent. Any sudden noise will set off shadows looming. The deep wells of Moria are abandoned, ancient, strewn in cobwebs, full of booby traps and skeletons in a vast trove of jewels and gold. After barely defeating the first obstacle—a troll, they continue to run down the dark hollows to escape a sea of Orcs. Gandalf knows these halls well and knows what is coming. No matter what he does, he knows what he has to face and that running will no longer be an option soon.

The shadows of our 8th House are meant to be confronted, for they eventually catch up to us in displaced reaction and projections, festering into something far worse.

The ripple of noise had finally disturbed what Gandalf feared, what he had wanted to avoid, his arch-enemy Balrog. A demon shadow shrouded in fire and darkness, Balrog intercepts Gandalf as he tries to escape with the others. A battle Gandalf wins, only to die in the end, as he’s pulled into the blazing abyss at the last minute by the monster’s fiery whip.

The 8th is also the House of intimate bonds, shared resources and transformation. Where the layer of veneer slowly starts to fall away by close relationships and the intimate settings involved. As the House after marriage and commitment(7th house), the 8th house is where our masks are eventually removed, bearing our naked selves to another–when our fears, shame, and deviances are exposed and when the past resurfaces.

The most ideal experience is sharing these hidden, vulnerable parts of ourselves with someone who responds with deep love, tenderness and compassion. When we are unconscious, if we have not processed the contents of our 8th House, unlocking the door can become a crisis in the making, its own layer of trauma. By entering, however, the truth is revealed. Light starts to enter the wound, awareness can set in, and transformation can start to take place.

Hope hangs by a thread at the beginning of The Two Towers, the sequel to The Fellowship of the Ring. With their wizard leader dead, the group starts to dismantle. The same dwindling faith is quickly restored when Gandalf reveals himself alive as Gandalf the White. Transformed, having more authority and magical prowess, he is the epitome of what happens when we deal with our 8th House guck. Having to discover what we are made of, we have gone through hell and back, accepted the past, along with the uglier parts of ourselves and made it our own. We become empowered by our 8th House.

Whether we are forced to figure it out on our own—with the help of major transits—or through the catalyst of intimate relationships, we must journey down to our own deep psychological recesses, bring light to the shadows and claim the well-spring of our inner power, self-authority, so to resurface with the treasures and the resources of our 8th House.
