The Magic and Misconceptions of the North and South Nodes and why the North Node is not Your Destiny

 The North Node represents our spiritual mission in life. It helps develop who we are and what we came here to do. The sign and house placement qualities guide us in the direction of resistance and discomfort—a way to set us back into balance from our South Node bent. The popular sentiment deduces the qualities of the North Node as a point of destiny. Though a very significant element to reach personal satisfaction, it can lead to misconceptions.

Unless everything points to the North Node vibe—meaning the majority of a natal chart’s energy is in the same expression, the North Node qualities should be considered a kind of GPS to stay on track from the fluctuations and changing missions of life. Similar to our native Jupiter systems of beliefs. Rahu, the Vedic term for the North Node, is considered to have the same voracious energy as Jupiter. The house and sign indicate where the bottomless hunger happens.

We can look to our South Node gut barometer to ground our North Node appetite.

The Northern and Southern nodal axis is one spectrum expressing different ends. One cannot be separate from the other. We keep the equilibrium by informing the other, while the North Node qualities are given the helm.

The nodes are not cosmic bodies in space, rather an orbital point in the sky where the Sun and Moon meet relative to the earth’s orbit. The upward motion would be the North Node sign and the downward motion is the South Node sign.

Our natal Moon reflects the patterns of our past, indicating our internal and nuturing needs, and our comforts. With the Moon’s emphasis on the past, the opposite force is our Sun sign, symbolizing external needs, where we are going (our destiny) and what we are trying to develop in life. The orbital meeting of the Sun and Moon is symbolic, and through the North Node expression, we move away from the past and into new stages of development. We implement the qualities of the NN sign to help us with our Sun’s growth and destiny, while the imprint of the South Node and the qualities we have mastered from previous incarnations takes on the Sun’s supporting role .

Our Sun is the vital energy to our chart. Our fuel to help keep the spokes of life moving. The Moon nodes and the elliptical orbit of the Sun and Moon help us move from one pattern to another. We are creating new patterns in this lifetime. From an evolutionary standpoint, imprints we will carry with us and further develop in following incarnations.

North Node Sleeper Agent

Through awareness and a slow awakening, we start to adopt the expression of our North Node sign. Synchronicity at work, we’ll find our experiences conveniently placed around that energy. There is a sense of support and guidance. People and events start to show up with similar qualities to our North Node position to aid our mission. The experience will be a positive challenge, yet feel unsettling by the foreign North Node sentiments. As we become more integrated into our unique North Node position, the qualities become pointers to deal with different aspects of our chart. Our North Node mission start to become instinctual.

Enlightened, we also become aware of the dissatisfaction from our South Node sign traits and house functions. Treading down the comforting path often causes emotional frustration, physical illness, and mental confusion-a downward trend which blocks growth.

North and South Node Dynamic

The dynamic of your chart determines the ease or difficulty of embodying your NN. Squares to planets can show agitation, yet movement and motivation. According to Maurice Fernandez, any aspect to your NN indicates a continued development tied to previous lives.

Trines and sextiles give compatibility to your NN and overall chart. There is a feeling of meant-to-be quality. A desire to follow the indicators of your NN. Less complex, fewer lessons are involved, making for a generally easier journey. For example, if you’re already an airy person with Libra elements in your chart and an Aquarius NN, the expression will feel seamless. With Libra objectivity and grace, you’re better equipped to understand the benefits and disadvantages of your SN Leo qualities.

Challenging aspects and incompatible elements can frustrate and discourage. For example, if you have dominant fire elements in your chart and your NN is in a water sign or house, the qualities of your NN can wash out your need to express outwardly and creatively. The friction can cause a resistance to hold back or contemplate.

The experience becomes the currency.

Saturn being the more challenging energetic aspect in our lives, we can look to our nodal axis to help navigate the planet’s restrictions and lessons. The same goes for our experience with Jupiter indulgences or lack of abundance, along with the complex layer of our chart. It becomes an added layer informed by instinct, as a guide map to help us through the matrix of our life. Our nodal axis eventually becomes the spiritual connection to our earthly experience.
