Saturn and Uranus

To understand Uranus’ influence and the possibilities in the making, we have to understand its relationship to Saturn.

Saturn symbolizes reality, all that we can see, touch and measure. It is the social construct we live in, the laws that govern us as a society. Saturn is common sense, its rules keep us safe, a blueprint we share to maintain civility. It also helps us focus on what matters. We place structures in our lives through Saturn to create goals and achieve heights. He is the teacher, father figure and authority that wants to whip us into shape so that we become our own authority.

However, bounded by the practicals of life, the traditional, tried and true, we can become fearful of stepping out of bounds, conscious of wanting to “belong.” We are conditioned to behave in certain ways and follow etiquette nationally, culturally and in familial settings. Most of us are cushioned in the known. When we want to grow beyond rules and what IS, our Saturn usually holds us back from doing anything new and risky. Saturn has its purpose. But as things can get old, stale, atrophied and rut-bound, Uranus creates the stage of opportunity and releases the burdens of the past.

Uranus is synonymous with Prometheus, the Greek god who stole the thunderbolt from Zeus to give to humans. The thunderbolt symbolizes knowledge. We have to go beyond what IS to change what we thought was impossible into possibility.

A Shift in Perspective

When Uranus transits a place in your chart, it will help you evolve your perspective in how you “see” yourself–1st House; change in values—2nd House; ideas, and thoughts—3rd House; comforts, the past–4th House; you get the idea.

Being the higher octave of Mercury mind, Uranus sees by gut instinct, by flashes of insight and following the patterns that whisper growth.

Uranus’ job is to break down the Saturn structures that have held and shaped past traumas, fears, beliefs, obligations, etc. The transit shakes up that vessel as an opportunity to see it differently so that change can start.

Uranus will bring new experiences, people, and bolts of ideas to dismantle identity and/or emotions related to the conditionings and obligations formed. It can feel shocking and overwhelming when Uranus comes around for two reasons:

1) Avoidance and Denial

Like the thunderbolt that Uranus symbolizes, the flashes of insight come in tiny spurts or shocks, similar to the friction of electric static. It keeps doing it until you pay attention and follow the pattern—relative to the house function Uranus transits and sits natally. According to Jeffrey Wolf Green, most respond to Uranus electric nudges as a nuisance. Ideas that we think of as absurd, unrealistic and wishful thinking. In other words, most of us deny Uranus’ calling.

2) Saturn Conditioning

Seen as irrational, unrealistic and too risky because it is seen from the Saturnian side of being. The whole point of the experience is to see it from an alternate lens. If we are open and embrace the unknown, we start to break free from the past, conditioned thoughts and structures.

Natal Uranus sits in the 5th House (creative self-identity)

Let’s say the person has had a negative belief (9th) about themselves since they were a child (5th). It’s held them back from expressing their true identity and creative expression. There may be a fear of shining, taking centre stage because of it. They fear ridicule or being isolated for their unique identity and view. It could also take the form of stopping them from pursuing higher education or philosophical beliefs.

Then enters transit Uranus in the 1st House of identity to shake up how they view and experience the world. The 1st, 5th, and 9th are all identity houses.

I want to add that as Uranus transited the 12th, it also cleared a karmic past, values (Taurus) have evolved, and their sense of self is informed by it. The past (Saturn) is no longer stopping them.

The 1st House becomes ripe for relating to people, communicating and seeing things differently. If the Gemini Rising self notes Uranus changes, the native learns to express the higher octave of Uranus possibilities. The higher knowledge cracks open their 5th house matters to help liberate them from what has held them back from expressing who they are.

The 1st House is our direct experience with others and how we relate and informs the rest of the chart as it is the door that filters our experience.
